What is good...

What makes it good?
the appreciation of a developed photograph from the preferred film
Who would find it good?
slr film camera users
Who wouldn't find it good?
DSLR enthusiasts
What is it better than?
pinhole camera
Profession
photographer
Celebrity
audrey hepburn
Place
photography gallery
Event
bestival
Product
a diary

Why?
"the appreciation of a developed photograph from the preferred film"
Once you've successfully developed the photographs from the chosen film you have a far greater appreciation of the final image compared to that of a digital one. It's really satisfying to see your image appear on the photographic paper after you've gone through the process of using and developing your film.
"slr film camera users"
Photographic film allows people who own an SLR to put their camera to use.
"DSLR enthusiasts"
Digital camera enthusiasts may not like film because the photographic process is a lot more slow then that compared to a digital camera.
"pinhole camera"
A pinhole camera is a lot less efficient (in terms of time and image quantity) compared to that of a film camera.
"photographer"
The film captures the image to which it was exposed in a similar way to how a photographer will photograph what is in front of them.
"audrey hepburn"
Audrey Hepburn starred in many black and white films that remind me of the photographs you might take when using film. In my opinion both camera film and Audrey Hepburn denote old fashion sophistication.
"photography gallery"
A photography gallery is a space in which images are put on display for others to share like how people would share the images from their camera film.
"bestival"
Using film cameras has recently become more fashionable, especially at events like festivals and Bestival was one of the most popular festivals this year.
"a diary"
Like a diary, film is a documentation of what people see and feel in their every day lives.

Concept & Rational

  • What are you trying to communicate? An idea, a concept, a message a lifestyle......?
  • Who are you trying to communicate to? Why and what do you want to achieve?
  • How will you use print design and production methods to achieve this?
  • What is already out there and how can you adapt, modify, reuse or respond to it?
WHAT
As photography has become so digital-based, I want people to try out/be informed about photographic film. I aim to encourage the use of film cameras and to help people develop an appreciation for the photographic process.
WHO
This is for anyone who has a passion for film cameras. I will also direct this at people who wish to learn more about photography and the process development.
HOW
I'd like to use packaging and promotion within this brief with sophisticated design. As I'm trying to promote the traditional dark room printing methods, I'd like to look into a natural/antique based colour palette.
WHAT
At the moment there's a lot of design based on digital photography and I'd really like to create a more traditional feel to the product design. Also, I don't feel like the packaging around today really encourages/sells photography and so I'll look into how this can be done through design.

CONCEPT
I aim to encourage the use of photographic film and to help people develop an appreciation for the photographic process...
RATIONAL
...by using informative yet sophisticated design with packaging and promotion.

Illustrator tutorial notes
- Set to scratch (under preferences) for photoshop files
- Swatches allows a consistent set of colouring to use
- Process colours, CMYK, used for print
- The black is made from 100% C, M, Y & K during print
- Small list view provides a more informative view of the swatches
- 'Add used colours' adds the colours on the artwork to the swatches
- Convert the swatch into a 'global' swatch & then you can adjust the tint
- Updating the original swatch will change the tints
- Spot colour:A colour that can't be printed with CMYK. It's a ready mixed ink. Requires it's own printing plate.
- It makes it possible to print colours that aren't available when using CMYK
- The production cost can be cheaper (although they can increase the cost with additional plates)
- Provides consistency.
- What would be the appropriate ink to choose? Coated? Uncoated?
- Again, use small list view for the reference numbers
- There's no guarantee that it'll come out looking exactly the same
- Change the printing mode from 'composite' to 'separations'
- You can save a swatch library if you need the colours for future use
- If you save a swatch library as AI then it's available in the home folder
- If saved as ASE then it'll become available in InDesign
